Cameroonians head to the polls in pivotal presidential election

Cameroonians are voting this Sunday in a presidential election that could shape the country’s future for years to come.

President Paul Biya, who has ruled since 1982, is seeking another term at the age of 92, making him the world’s oldest serving leader.

More than eight million people are eligible to vote across the nation’s ten regions. Polling stations opened at 7:00 CAT and close at 18:00 CAT.

The vote follows weeks of spirited campaigning, with rallies and debates dominating the national conversation. While Biya remains a dominant political force, several opposition figures, including Issa Tchiroma Bakary and Cabral Libii, are hoping to capitalise on growing calls for change.

The mood across the country is one of cautious optimism, mixed with unease in some areas, especially in the English-speaking regions where ongoing tensions have raised security concerns.

This election is seen as a crucial moment for Cameroon’s democracy, and the world’s attention is fixed on how the process unfolds.
