President José Maria Neves has announced his bid for a second five-year term in Cape Verde’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled to take place across the West African island nation on November 15, 2026.
Addressing a press conference in the capital, Praia, Neves, who previously served as Prime Minister for 15 years before winning the Presidency in 2021, stated that his re-election campaign aims to leverage his institutional experience to foster national stability and economic growth. The announcement opens a dynamic campaign cycle, with several political figures stepping forward to challenge the incumbent.
Political analyst Professor José Francisco Pavia highlighted that the election landscape reflects Cape Verde’s mature democratic tradition, characterised by peaceful power shifts and competitive democratic debate.
“I am a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Cabo Verde,” Neves declared, emphasising his commitment to building on his first term’s record. “I do so with a sense of duty fulfilled, with serenity, confidence, and an unbridled determination to continue serving our country together.”
Following established constitutional procedure during presidential campaign periods, the national assembly leadership will handle interim executive arrangements as candidates finalise their formal registrations ahead of the elections.
