The Central African Republic (CAR) is marking 66 years of independence from France, reflecting on more than six decades of political change, conflict and efforts to build lasting peace and development.
The country gained independence on August 13, 1960, with David Dacko becoming its first president.
Since then, CAR has experienced periods of political instability and armed conflict.
The conflicts have continued to pose challenges to its development and efforts to establish lasting peace.
The country is currently led by President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who is serving his third term in office.
As CAR mark Independence Day, attention is turning to the country’s journey since independence, the challenges it faces today and what is needed to build a more peaceful and prosperous future.
