The Central African Republic (CAR) is set for a critical election later this month, December 28, 2025, raising concerns over security and the narrowing space for opposition activity.

The vote comes after a 2023 constitutional referendum that removed presidential term limits, paving the way for incumbent President Faustin-Archange Touadéra to remain in office indefinitely. Several opposition figures were initially barred from running, though some were reinstated by the Constitutional Court in mid-November.

Geopolitical analyst Aaron Ng’ambi emphasised that the elections are significant not just for the presidential race, but also for the country’s first municipal contests. “There’s clear manoeuvring to give the incumbent an unfair advantage,” Ng’ambi said, noting that Touadéra appears focused on consolidating his power rather than ensuring a genuinely democratic process.
