The decree sets the campaign period from December 13 until December 26 at midnight. Authorities have described the polls as a significant step in consolidating democratic institutions in the country.
Opposition groups under the Republican Bloc for the Defence of the Constitution have voiced concern over the decision, rejecting recent constitutional reforms and pressing for a political dialogue before the elections take place.
Ludovic Ledo, national and international co-ordinator of the G-16, said in an interview; “These elections cannot be credible without first addressing the deep political divisions in our country. Dialogue is essential if we are to move forward peacefully and avoid further instability.”
