Chad and France appear to be quietly reviving a longstanding military partnership that N’Djamena abruptly severed in November 2024, marking a significant strategic pivot in the region.
Under a new framework initiated in April, French forces have resumed operations focusing strictly on training, intelligence gathering, and air support for the Chadian military. Crucially, this revised security agreement operates without the re-establishment of permanent French military bases.
Following the initial expulsion of French troops, N’Djamena attempted to diversify its security alliances, actively turning to Russia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates for military and tactical assistance. Yet, with the security situation across the country still a source of severe concern, this sudden geopolitical U-turn raises critical questions about the realities of sovereignty and military dependence in the Sahel.
