Detained Chad opposition leader Max Kemkoye has issued an open letter to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno marking his 100th day in custody, condemning his imprisonment as politically motivated and urging the government to convene national reconciliation talks.
Kemkoye, the Former Spokesperson for the dissolved Consultation Group of Political Actors, was arrested on April 25 alongside several other opposition figures following the judicial dissolution of the coalition by the Supreme Court. On May 8, he was sentenced to eight years in prison on charges including armed assembly.
In his message released on Monday, the opposition figure rejected the court’s ruling and criticised what he described as an escalating crackdown on democratic freedoms. Kemkoye called on Déby to prioritise national unity by organizing comprehensive national dialogues aimed at institutional and budgetary reforms.
Civil rights advocates and political commentators have echoed these calls, highlighting growing concerns over the detention of political opponents and the shrinking space for democratic engagement in Chad following the country’s political transition.
