Chairperson of South Africa’s (SA) Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Gloria Serobe has called for targeted economic inclusion of rural communities, highlighting their potential to drive sustainable growth in key sectors such as tourism and agriculture.
Speaking at the Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit in Johannesburg, Serobe highlighted that rural communities represent an estimated 38 to 40% of the national population, yet have historically been excluded from mainstream economic activity.
She urged public and private sector investors to prioritise infrastructure development, enterprise support, and direct market access in rural areas to broaden participation and foster inclusive economic transformation across the country.
