South Africa (SA) is observing Child Protection Week from May 29 to June 5 under the theme, “Working Together to End Violence Against Children.”
While awareness campaigns continue across the country, concerns remain about the persistent levels of violence, abuse and neglect affecting children.
Stakeholders are calling for greater community involvement and a renewed focus on creating safe environments where children can thrive.
Child Protection Week provides an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing children and the measures needed to keep them safe from violence, abuse and neglect.
Acting Head of Child Protection at United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) SA, Sinah Moruane, says the week is an important reminder of UNICEF’s mandate to protect children’s rights.
“This is a very important period to reflect and to look at the issues that actually affect children, especially violence. Talking to the mandate of UNICEF, which is basically to really mainstream and to protect the rights of children.
