Traffic has returned to normal at the Lebombo Border Post between SA and Mozambique

Traffic has returned to normal at the Lebombo Border Post between South Africa (SA) and Mozambique after heavy congestion caused by a surge in travellers over the Christmas period.

The border crossing, one of the busiest in southern Africa, experienced unusually high volumes of movement in the days leading up to and including Christmas Day, as thousands of people travelled from SA into Mozambique.

In response, the Border Management Authority (BMA) introduced manual processing measures to speed up the clearance of travellers and ease pressure at the port of entry.

BMA Commissioner Dr Mike Masiapato said more than 18 450 people were processed while exiting SA on Christmas Day alone. Of these, about 450 travellers were cleared using the manual system.

He added that officials are now capturing the manually processed travellers into the authority’s enhanced control system to ensure all movements are properly recorded.

Operations at the Lebombo Border Post have since stabilised, with traffic flowing smoothly as authorities continue to manage holiday travel between SA and Mozambique.
