Former Comoros President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi has been denied permission to travel abroad for medical care, despite warnings that his health is rapidly deteriorating.
The state prosecutor’s office blocked the request, stating there is no evidence to justify an urgent medical evacuation and claiming the former leader’s life is not in immediate danger.
The decision follows a series of public appeals urging the government to allow Sambi to leave the country for specialized treatment. His family and supporters have grown increasingly worried about his condition behind bars.
Sambi, who led the island nation from 2006 to 2011, is currently serving a life sentence following a 2022 conviction for high treason.
Speaking out against the ruling, his daughter, Tisslame Sambi, has strongly criticised the judiciary’s refusal to grant her father medical release, maintaining that his health remains in a critical state.
