In Tanzania, concern is growing following reports of violence after the October 2025 elections

In Tanzania, concern is growing following reports of violence after the October 2025 elections. Human Rights Watch says security forces used force against protesters, with allegations that some civilians were killed or injured. The organisation is calling for an independent investigation and accountability.

Denis Beru, a journalist and team leader at Grassroots Journalism in Kenya, says the situation has had a serious impact on ordinary people. “There are credible reports that even people who were not part of the protests were affected. Many families have been left dealing with loss and uncertainty,” he said.

He added that witnesses have described incidents where injured people struggled to access medical care. “In some cases, roadblocks made it difficult for the wounded to reach hospitals, and that may have worsened the situation,” Beru explained.

Human rights groups say there is a need for a thorough investigation to establish what happened and to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
