Campaigning has officially begun in Republic of the Congo, with veteran leader Denis Sassou Nguesso expected to extend his long tenure in power.
The 82-year-old President is seeking what could be his final five-year term. Sassou Nguesso first ruled the country from 1979 to 1992 before returning to power in 1997 following a civil war. He has since remained one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
The official campaign launch took place in the oil-producing coastal city of Pointe-Noire, ahead of the presidential vote scheduled for March 15.
Six opposition candidates are contesting the election, including political newcomer Destin Gavet. Opposition figures have sought to challenge the ruling party’s long dominance, though analysts say the incumbent still enjoys strong institutional and political advantages.
