Controversial SA businessperson back in court

Matlala is seeking to appeal the Alexandra Magistrates Court decision to deny him bail. In September, Matlala unsuccessfully applied for bail, with the lower court ruling that he is a flight risk and a danger to society. Matlala is accused of orchestrating the failed assassination of his former partner Tebogo Thobejane in October 2023.
Matlala believes that the Alexandra Magistrates Court erred in its decision to deny him bail. In September, the director of four companies told the court that staying in prison will affect his businesses which pay monthly salaries of just under two million rand. He denied being the mastermind behind the attempted murder of Tebogo Thobejane, maintaining that the state’s case against him is weak. However, Magistrate Syta Prinsloo maintained that Matlala failed to prove exceptional circumstances to justify his release on bail.
