The trial of Gabon’s former First Lady, Sylvia Bongo, and her son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, has begun in Libreville, though both were absent when proceedings opened on Monday.

Sylvia Bongo is accused of embezzling public funds and laundering money, while Noureddin Bongo Valentin faces charges of illicit enrichment and corruption. Twelve people were expected to appear before the court in this first case on the session’s roll, but only nine attended.

The case, now in its second day, has drawn considerable attention as Gabon continues its anti-corruption campaign following the removal of former President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Analyst and opinion leader Gaël Koumba Ayouné, speaking from Libreville, said the trial marks a defining moment in the country’s political transition. “This is more than just a legal case, it’s a test of Gabon’s commitment to justice and accountability,” he said. “Many citizens are watching closely to see whether this process will truly signal a break from the past or simply repeat old patterns.”

He added that the proceedings will likely influence how the public perceives the government’s promise to fight corruption and restore public trust.
