A fuel tanker sailing off the coast of Somalia has come under attack

A fuel tanker sailing off the coast of Somalia has come under attack from armed assailants who fired machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before managing to board the vessel.

The ship, operated by Greek company Latsco Marine Management, was carrying a cargo of gasoline when the incident occurred. The company confirmed that all 24 crew members are safe and have taken cover inside the ship’s secure citadel, a fortified area designed for emergencies.

European Union naval forces patrolling the region have been alerted and are providing support to ensure the crew’s safety and regain control of the vessel.

Pirate activity along the Horn of Africa has been largely contained in recent years, but maritime officials warn that a rise in such incidents could threaten vital shipping routes through the region.
