Political commentator Mighti Jamie based in South Africa says former Senegalese President Macky Sall lacks the moral and leadership record to take on the role of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General.
Jamie’s concerns focus on Sall’s actions during his Presidency, particularly his attempts to extend his term and decisions that critics say suppressed political opposition.
Sall, who led Senegal from 2012 to 2024, has officially declared his candidacy to succeed António Guterres, whose term ends later this year. His bid is backed by Burundi, currently holding the African Union’s rotating Presidency.
During his final years in office, Sall’s government faced accusations of violently suppressing protests, resulting in dozens of deaths. Jamie adds that while he generally supports African leaders seeking global positions, Sall’s record raises serious questions about his suitability for the UN’s top diplomatic role.
The candidacy is expected to spark debate across Africa and internationally, with governance and human rights issues likely to dominate discussions about the continent’s representation at the UN.
