Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially overtaken the United States (US) as Europe’s largest external supplier of jet fuel, exporting an estimated 466 000 metric tons of aviation fuel to the continent in June.
According to data from S&P Global Commodity Insights, last month’s export volumes represent the highest for the mega-refinery since it began operations in 2024. While Nigeria’s supply surged, US jet fuel exports to Europe dropped significantly due to falling European market prices.
The massive jump in production means Nigeria has now become a net petrol exporter for the first time in decades. The shift marks a historic turning point for Africa’s largest economy as it transitions from being heavily reliant on fuel imports to establishing itself as a dominant export hub.
