De Klerk stars as SA stun India in Women’s World Cup comeback

Nadine de Klerk struck a blistering unbeaten 84 off 54 balls to guide South Africa (SA) to a remarkable three-wicket win over co-hosts India at the Women’s World Cup.

Chasing India’s total of 251 all out, the Proteas looked in trouble at 81-5, seemingly heading for a second defeat in three matches. Captain Laura Wolvaardt had begun the fightback with a patient 70 off 111 balls, sharing a 61-run stand with Chloe Tryon, who contributed 49 from 66 balls.

De Klerk’s explosive innings, featuring five sixes, dismantled an increasingly bewildered Indian attack. A 69-run partnership with Tryon quickly shifted momentum, and De Klerk sealed victory with seven balls to spare, leaving India players and fans stunned.

The win brings SA level on points with India, denying Harmanpreet Kaur’s side the chance to move to the top of the table after their first defeat of the tournament.
