The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO) has moved to reassure African partners that SA does not support or endorse recent anti-immigration protests that have unfolded in parts of the country.
The clarification comes after concerns were reportedly raised by Ghana during bilateral engagements
The issue arises against the backdrop of heightened tensions over migration, with several African countries expressing concern about the safety of their citizens in SA amid recent anti-immigrant protests.
DIRCO Spokesperson Chrispin Phiri has rejected suggestions that SA government is backing the protests, stressing that the presence of police at demonstrations should not be interpreted as support for the views being expressed.
He says law enforcement officers have a constitutional obligation to monitor, facilitate and secure peaceful protests while maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of all involved.
