The newly elected International President of Doctors Without Borders, Doctor Javid Abdelmoneim, has called on the global community to reconsider recent health funding cuts, warning that they could reverse years of progress in global health.
Speaking to the media at the organisation’s Johannesburg offices in South Africa, Abdelmoneim described the decision by several wealthy nations, including the United States, which earlier this year reduced its President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief funding for HIV/AIDS, as dangerous and potentially devastating.
“The gains made over the last few years, especially in HIV, TB, malaria, we stand to lose those with real-life consequence for people. And I would urge world leaders to ensure that funding remains. This is a matter of life or death,” said Abdelmoneim.
