Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has officially begun construction of what is expected to become Africa’s largest indoor sports facility, the Kinshasa Arena, in the capital Kinshasa.
The project was launched by President Félix Tshisekedi and will feature a modern, multi-purpose venue with a seating capacity of 20 000. The arena is valued at around $105 million and forms part of government efforts to expand the country’s sports and entertainment infrastructure.
Once completed, the Kinshasa Arena will host basketball games, concerts, exhibitions and other large-scale events, positioning itself as one of the continent’s premier indoor venues.
Officials say the facility will surpass several leading arenas in Africa, including the 10 000-capacity BK Arena in Kigali and the 15 000-seat Dakar Arena in Senegal’s capital.
The project is being viewed as a major step in boosting DRC’s profile as a destination for international sporting and entertainment events, while also supporting the growth of the country’s creative and sports industries.
