Malawi’s Second Vice President Enock Chihana says the situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains critical and continues to pose a threat to regional stability.
Chihana was speaking on Sunday evening during the opening of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Defence and Security Co-operation (Troika), meeting at the 46th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (SA).
He was speaking on behalf of Malawi, the outgoing chair of the SADC organ on politics, SADC Organ Troika.
Chihana represented Malawian President Arthur Mutharika, who is not attending the summit.
The SADC Organ Troika is responsible for promoting peace, security, political stability and democratic governance within the SADC region.
The organ co-ordinates regional responses to political and security challenges, including conflicts, elections, defence cooperation and peacekeeping efforts.
In his opening remarks, Chihana said the people of eastern DRC have endured conflict for too long, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through collective efforts,
