A military court in Uvira, located in South Kivu province, has sentenced 27 Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) soldiers to death after finding them guilty of cowardice on the battlefield.
The ruling follows formal proceedings by the garrison-level military tribunal assessing troop conduct during ongoing security operations against armed rebel groups in the volatile eastern region. Military prosecutors argued that the soldiers abandoned their posts during active combat, undermining operations and breaching military discipline.
The harsh sentences come amid a broader crackdown by the Congolese military command to enforce strict discipline and bolster morale among front-line forces fighting in North and South Kivu.
The reinstatement and enforcement of capital punishment for military offenses, including treason, desertion, and cowardice, has been utilised by the government as a deterrent to maintain cohesion in the operational ranks.
