Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi said in a speech to lawmakers this Monday that Rwanda is already violating its commitments under a peace deal mediated by Washington, undermining efforts to end fighting in the east.
Last week in Washington, United States President Donald Trump welcomed Congolese and Rwandan leaders to sign new accords aimed at ending years of fighting in the mineral-rich region. On Thursday, both Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame reaffirmed their intention to uphold the June deal to stabilise the country and pave the way for increased Western mining investment.
Despite their public commitments, Tshisekedi told lawmakers the agreement was already being undermined by Rwanda, a development he said threatens lasting peace and security in eastern DRC.
