Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Prime Minister Judith Suminwa accused neighboring Rwanda of driving a war of aggression through the M23 rebel group, while armed factions including the Allied Democratic Forces and Co-operative for the Development of the Congo continue to worsen mass displacement and human suffering across the region.
Suminwa told the assembly that peace remains an unfulfilled promise for millions of citizens in eastern DRC despite paper diplomatic agreements.
She cautioned international markets that surging global demand for critical transition metals like cobalt, copper, and lithium must not fund local atrocities, stating that the world cannot build a decarbonised green economy using “blood-stained minerals” sourced from vulnerable communities.
