The East African Community (EAC) has launched a regional training initiative in Kenya to train 120 frontline medical professionals from all eight member states to respond to high-consequence infectious disease outbreaks such as ebola and mpox.
Organised under the Training in the EAC for High-Consequence Infectious Diseases programme alongside the German Agency for International Co-operation, the sessions at the Aga Khan University in Nairobi focus on case identification, clinical management, and emergency response.
Acting Director of Social Sectors Dr Dorcas Omukhulu highlighted that building a shared pool of skilled clinicians is critical for rapid cross-border containment.
The bloc has also appealed for $45 million in international funding to expand its mobile laboratory network from 10 to 34 units across key strategic border crossings by 2027.
