Malawi faces deep political cracks driven by severe economic hardship

Malawi faces deep political cracks driven by severe economic hardship, internal party power struggles, and a growing crisis of confidence in democratic institutions.

The cracks became more visible earlier this week, when the country’s first Vice-President, Jane Ansah was absent at a cabinet meeting held at the State house in Lilongwe.

It is reported that she was excluded from the Monday’s cabinet summit, this has fuel impression that Ansah is being pushed to the margins.

She came into office after the 2025 elections on a joint collaboration with President Peter Mutharika, becoming the country’s second in command.
