ECOWAS has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, urging all parties to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

While acknowledging the right of states to combat international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking, ECOWAS reminded the international community of its obligation under international law to uphold the sovereignty of nations, citing Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

In a statement issued, the regional bloc aligned itself with a statement released by the African Union on January 3, which called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela.

ECOWAS reiterated its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and emphasised support for an inclusive process as the country charts its political future. The organisation stressed the importance of respecting Venezuela’s independence and territorial integrity during this critical period.
