Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has monitored The Gambia’s supplementary voter registration exercise as the country steps up preparations for its presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026.
The regional bloc’s Permanent Mission in The Gambia carried out a three-day visit to registration centres across four regions, Basse, Farafenni, Soma and Sibanor, to observe the ongoing process and engage with electoral officials.
The voter registration campaign, launched by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on April 8, ran until May 21. The exercise is designed to ensure that eligible citizens who are not yet registered can be added to the voters’ roll ahead of the country’s next round of elections.
The registration drive forms part of The Gambia’s 2026–2027 electoral calendar and is seen as a key step towards the presidential election later this year, as well as legislative and municipal elections scheduled for 2027.
ECOWAS said the exercise is an important part of ensuring an inclusive and credible electoral process. The mission’s visit was conducted under its 2026 work plan and reflects the regional body’s continued support for democratic governance and electoral integrity in member states.
