A coalition of 43 civil society organisations from Togo and across the continent has issued an open letter to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, urging the regional body to enforce a court ruling declaring Togo’s 2024 constitutional reforms illegal.
The move follows a ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice, which determined that the constitutional amendments adopted by a parliament whose term had already expired amounted to an unconstitutional change of government.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Koko Edoh Semegnon of the Front Citoyen Togo Debout confirmed that rights groups are pressing the West African bloc to hold Togolese authorities accountable to regional democratic frameworks and the rule of law.
