ECOWAS moves to reduce aid reliance through regional investment fund

Leadership figures from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) have met in Lomé to forge closer institutional ties and accelerate regional infrastructure and human development initiatives.

Led by ECOWAS Commission Vice-President Anthony Oluwatosin Ogunjimi, the delegation met with the bank’s executives to align strategic priorities directly with the bloc’s overarching Vision 2050 framework, focusing on delivering tangible socioeconomic benefits across member states.

According to ECOWAS officials, discussions centered on expanding joint financing mechanisms, including the Human Capital Development Catalytic Investment Fund designed to support youth and women entrepreneurs, alongside rolling out a new regional investment pipeline under the Community Development Programme.

Both institutions emphasised the critical need to leverage the Community Levy to reduce the region’s reliance on constrained international development assistance, agreeing to transition from high-level political talks to technical implementation teams tasked with defining clear project timelines and responsibilities.
