Australia knocked out as Egypt seal first-ever World Cup last-16

Egypt have made history by becoming the second African nation to seal a place in the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.

The Pharaohs edged out Australia 4-2 on penalties after a grueling Friday night encounter ended 1-1 after extra time.

Egypt took an early lead in the 13th minute courtesy of a strike from Emam Ashour. However, the Socceroos found a lifeline ten minutes into the second half when a Mohamed Hany own goal drew them level, eventually forcing the match into extra time.

When it came down to sudden death, the Pharaohs were flawless from the spot, converting all four of their penalties. Australia faltered under the pressure, missing two of their spot-kicks.

The victory marks a monumental milestone for Egypt, who are celebrating their first-ever appearance in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup, while Australia head home.
