A leading insurance firm believes the energy crisis and unequal labour market practices continue to hinder economic growth for South Africa (SA)

According to Coface Africa Economist, Aroni Chaudhuri, says the economy has been stagnant for the past 15 years, underperforming against most emerging economies globally.

Chaudhuri says while reforms and policies are in the place, a much greater concerted effort is needed to get the ball rolling.

“I have been studying SA for well over 10 years now. I started my career as an economist because I had worked on SA when I was a student, so a long time ago. And so, my idea is, the SA economy, while it has shown some amount of resilience facing some of the shocks that happened in the previous years,  the reality is that the economy has been stagnating now for around 15 years. If you look at SA’s Gross Domestic Product per capita levels in 2025, the level is actually below the one of 2007,” he said.
