Ethiopia has introduced a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags, after research showed they make up 46% of the country’s plastic waste.
Violations carry fines of $12 to $2 000, while businesses producing, importing, selling, or distributing plastic bags face penalties of up to $1 228 and up to five years in prison.
Journalist and team leader at Grassroots Journalism Kenya, Dennis Beru, said the ban is a positive step but warned that enforcement alone would not be enough.
“Banning single-use plastic is an important move, but for it to work, communities need awareness campaigns and accessible alternatives. People must understand why this matters and have practical options to replace plastic bags,” Beru said.
