Ethiopian runner Tigst Assefa overcomes late physical strain to win Berlin Marathon

Ethiopian long-distance runner Tigst Assefa secured victory at the Berlin Marathon despite suffering a late physical strain that disrupted her record-breaking attempt.

The 29-year-old athlete, who previously secured silver at the Paris Olympics, established an early lead, passing the 15-kilometer mark a minute ahead of the chase pack. While maintaining a pace inside world-record territory through 35 kilometers, Assefa experienced visible discomfort in the closing stages, which slowed her final split times.

Despite hobbling across the finish line, she won the race in 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 4 seconds, setting a new Berlin course record and recording the third-fastest women’s marathon time in history.
