The United Nations (UN) has expressed grave concern over the sharp deterioration of the security situation in Ethiopia, warning that expanding conflict across northern regions threatens to plunge the area back into full-scale war.
Speaking at a news briefing in New York, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the global body is particularly troubled by reports of drone strikes, widespread internet outages, and civilian harm across Tigray, Amhara, and Afar.
According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, recent airstrikes hit five schools in Tigray on September 22, while a mortar strike in Kobo, Amhara, killed civilians two days later. The UN for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned that growing insecurity and the seizure of relief vehicles by armed groups are severing vital aid routes, urging all warring parties to cease hostilities and immediately resume dialogue under the 2022 peace framework.
