ExxonMobil has awarded early-investment contracts worth approximately $1.1 billion for critical equipment for the first phase of the Rovuma LNG project in Cabo Delgado Mozambique, bringing the development closer to a Final Investment Decision (FID).
The Mozambican government expects the FID to be declared by September 2026. Valued at roughly $20 billion, Rovuma LNG stands as one of the largest private investments in Africa and is projected to deliver a significant boost to state revenues and Mozambique’s broader economy.
The commitment signals renewed momentum for the country’s energy sector following years of security delays in northern Mozambique.
While the equipment deals demonstrate strong commercial backing from international operators, Mozambican economist Salvador Raisse points out that realising the project’s full potential will depend on maintaining regional stability, managing fiscal expectations, and ensuring that indigenous Mozambique businesses actively participate in the supply chain.
