South Africa’s (SA) Department of Social Development has reported an increase in cases of violence against women and children during the festive season, with alcohol and other illicit substances identified as key contributing factors.
Department Spokesperson Sandy Godlwana emphasised that the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Command Centre will remain fully operational throughout the holidays to support survivors. She urged families, communities, and individuals to take an active role in preventing violence, supporting victims, and reporting perpetrators.
“We can assure the public that the Centre is prepared to respond to the increased demand during this period. No survivor should suffer in silence,” Godlwana said. Survivors can reach the GBV Command Centre by calling 0800 428 428.
