Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has come under criticism from human rights organisations after awarding a new peace prize to United States (US) President Donald Trump at the men’s World Cup draw in Washington on Friday.
FIFA President Giovanni Infantino described the award as recognising individuals who have made “exceptional and extraordinary contributions to peace” and brought people together globally. The prize, unveiled last month, followed Infantino’s claim that Trump deserved a Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Israeli-Gaza ceasefire.
However, the decision has sparked controversy. Campaign group Human Rights Watch has urged FIFA to clarify the selection process, including providing the list of nominees, the judges involved, and the criteria used to determine the winner.
