Five suspects are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg, South Africa (SA) on Monday, charged with contravening the Foreign Military Assistance Act.

According to police, the men were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport while allegedly en route to Russia. They are suspected of being recruited to fight in the war against Ukraine.

Their arrests follow last week’s reports that another 17 SA men were stranded in Ukraine after being lured into joining mercenary forces with the promise of lucrative contracts.

Hawks Spokesperson Katlego Mogale said investigations were still in their early stages.

“This investigation was conducted based on the information that we received that allegedly there have been people who were sent to Russia to be part of the war that is going on there. The investigation is at its early stages, and it is up to us to pre-empt who is involved without a proper investigation taking place.”
