Flooding crisis in Malawi claims 13 lives after days of rain

13 ​people had died in four ‌days of heavy rain
Malawi’s government said on Thursday that at least 13 ​people had died in four ‌days of heavy rain and flooding across the donor dependent Southern African country.
The Department ​of Disaster Management Affairs said ​it had received preliminary reports ⁠from 16 of the country’s 36 ​councils.
So far, 9 598 households have ​been affected by the rains and flooding. Twelve evacuation camps have been set up in ​six councils.
The disaster management department ​has begun distributing aid to affected households.
It is ‌asking ⁠for financial support and technical assistance from local and international partners as search and rescue operations continue.
The ​department ​says livestock ⁠and crops including tobacco have been washed away ​in some parts of the ​country.
Malawi ⁠is one of the biggest producers of burley tobacco in the world ⁠and ​tobacco is its ​main export commodity.
