At least 30 people have died after heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in parts of southern Ethiopia.

Local officials in the Gamo area say several communities were hit after days of intense rainfall caused hillsides to give way and rivers to overflow.

Authorities say the highland region is prone to such disasters, as steep terrain and saturated soil often lead to landslides during periods of heavy rain.

Emergency teams are assessing the damage while local leaders warn that more rainfall could increase the risk of further flooding in the area.
