Three foreign nationals accused of operating as con prophets have been arrested in Penina Park in Polokwane in South Africa’s (SA) Limpopo province.

Police Spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said the undocumented Ugandan nationals allegedly scammed several people by posing as prophets and spiritual healers offering fake services.

According to Ledwaba, the arrests followed a police operation targeting fraudulent spiritual practices that had been reported in the area. Community members had raised concerns about suspicious activities linked to the suspects, who allegedly promised miracles, financial breakthroughs and healing in exchange for money.

Police searched the property where the suspects were operating and recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, including counterfeit notes.

Officers also found five rats believed to have been used to deceive victims during staged “spiritual demonstrations”. Ledwaba said the animals formed part of manipulative tactics designed to convince people that the suspects possessed supernatural powers.

“A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of undisclosed amounts of counterfeit money and five rats allegedly used as tools to deceive victims during their fraudulent activities. The suspects were immediately placed under arrest,” Ledwaba said.

The suspects are expected to face multiple charges, including possession of counterfeit money and contravention of the Immigration Act. Further charges relating to fraud and deception may be added as more victims come forward.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious individuals claiming special spiritual abilities for financial gain. Ledwaba said cases of fraudulent prophets continue to rise in some parts of the province, with criminals exploiting people who are seeking healing, guidance or financial relief.

Authorities in Limpopo have also warned that undocumented foreign nationals involved in criminal activities will face strict action, including possible deportation after the completion of legal processes.
