The potential return of former Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló from exile in Morocco is sparking fresh political and legal debate across the nation as preparations intensify for general elections scheduled for December 2026.
Supporters of Embaló recently launched a campaign across social media platforms calling for his immediate return to Guinea-Bissau from North Africa, where he has been living in exile following his departure through Senegal and Congo-Brazzaville. However, civil society organisations and legal experts have raised concerns regarding the potential impact of his presence on the country’s fragile transition process, following the military intervention that forced him from power.
Human rights lawyer and activist Dr Fodé Mané highlighted the complex constitutional and security considerations surrounding his potential homecoming.
“The return of any national citizen is a constitutionally guaranteed right, but in the case of a former head of state within a post-military intervention context, the legal and public order implications require a clear institutional framework to preserve social peace,” Fodé Mané noted.
