Former Mozambican Finance Minister Manuel Chang has appeared before a federal court in the United States (US) in a renewed attempt to secure his release from detention.
Chang is asking the court to hear his application for release as legal proceedings linked to the country’s high-profile hidden debt scandal continue. His case has drawn strong attention across Africa, particularly in Mozambique, where the scandal triggered a deep economic crisis and strained public finances.
Chang was extradited to the US to face charges related to alleged fraud and corruption involving billions of dollars in state-backed loans. The deals, agreed without full public disclosure, later emerged as a major factor behind Mozambique’s financial collapse.
The US court is expected to hear arguments from both the defence and prosecutors as the case moves forward.
