South African (SA) former Safety and Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi has strongly denied claims that he participated in secret meetings with apartheid-era generals to help them evade prosecution for human rights violations.
Testifying before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cases Inquiry public hearings in Newtown, Johannesburg, Mufamadi refuted assertions made earlier this year by German author Dr Ole Bubenzer.
Bubenzer told the inquiry that Mufamadi and other senior African National Congress (ANC) figures, including Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, met with apartheid generals between 1998 and 2004, citing a 2006 interview with former Defence Force General Jan Geldenhuys.
Mufamadi, who served as Police Minister under President Nelson Mandela from May 1994 to June 1999, rejected the claims during his testimony, maintaining that he was no longer part of the security cluster during the period in question and had no involvement in any such talks.
