South Africa’s (SA) former President Thabo Mbeki is appearing before the judicial commission, the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry today, as questions persist over whether political interference blocked the prosecution of apartheid-era crimes referred by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
AfriForum Chief Executive Officer Kallie Kriel says the organisation is attending the proceedings, seeking answers, and has formally applied for its Private Prosecution Unit head, Advocate Gerrie Nel, to cross-examine Mbeki.
Mbeki’s appearance follows the Constitutional Court’s dismissal of an attempt by him and former President Jacob Zuma to have commission chair Justice Sisi Khampepe recuse herself.
