A son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has been arrested in South Africa’s (SA) Johannesburg after allegedly shooting a gardener at a property in Hyde Park, police and local media report.
The incident unfolded on Thursday at the affluent Hyde Park residence where Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, one of Mugabe’s sons, is believed to live. Emergency services rushed the gardener to hospital, where he is in a critical condition, while police secured the scene and began their investigation.
Initial reports had suggested that a security guard was shot, but authorities now confirm the victim is a gardener who was wounded during a dispute at the property. Law enforcement officers remain on site as inquiries continue, and the suspect is in custody.
A man identifying himself as “Batista”, who said he works as part of the family’s private security detail, told reporters he had been called to the property but was denied entry. “I’m working for them. I want to help them because they are calling me inside, I don’t know what’s going on,” he said, expressing confusion over the situation.
Police have not yet released further official details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting or the condition of the injured gardener. The investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected as authorities provide updates
