Focus on the framework deal in Greenland

The framework deal on Greenland, agreed with United States (US) President Donald Trump, would require North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) allies to step up on Arctic security.

That’s the position of NATO Secretary General after the new framework on a future deal was announced by Trump late Wednesday, who also backtracked on threats to impose fresh tariffs on European countries that opposed his advances on Greenland.

Trump also used his visit to Davos, Switzerland, to launch his Board of Peace, which was initially set up to undergird Gaza’s ceasefire to redevelopment but appeared to now be framed as a tool to resolve international conflicts, which could position it as a potential rival to the United Nations, particularly the Security Council.

After pressure from European allies, Trump backtracked on both military threats to take over Greenland and imposing punitive tariffs on countries that opposed his efforts to take control of the island nation.
